FAQs
Is soapstone available in a variety of colors?
We offer stone from 4 quarries in Brazil as well as the only domestic stone from Virginia. Some stone has a greenish hue and some stone has a dark gray hue. The greenish hue is especially visible when oil has just been applied.
What do seams look like? How do you join them?

Our seams are about 1/16 of an inch wide, which we sand flush so you can’t feel them. We use epoxy to join our seams together. The bottom section of this photo has been oiled and the top is unoiled. You can see how the seam melts away with oiling.
What does a template look like and could I make it myself to save some money?

We have entered the 21st Century! Doug Teter, our resident templating expert and fine craftsman, will record your countertop information into his laptop computer using a Faro Digitizer. This information is then transferred to another program and we are ready to cut your tops precisely and in a timely fashion. Most of the jobs we do are installed within 1 (ONE) week of the day we template. Compare that with the “other countertop guys.”
If you are planning on making a template of your own, give us a call and we can review your template and work with you to get the best final results.
What is a template and do you make them?
Yes, we make templates! A template is a pattern used in the construction process to ensure precise cuts and the best quality installation. A quality template is vital to achieving the best result for your project.
What size slabs do you work with?
Slab sizes have increased over the last few years. We now see some slabs as large as 70” x 118”.
How often do I have to oil the stone?
This answer depends on the look you’re trying to achieve. We generally recommend you apply mineral oil twice a week for a month and then apply oil at your discretion after that. You have built a base and the areas where you do food prep and cooking will stay darker. If left alone after this process you will see the tops get lighter as you move toward the clean-up area. Anytime you want the tops to all look uniform, just add a quick application of our mineral oil. For more detailed instructions please see our Care and Maintenance page.
